SUMMARY:Ana de Almeida & Leo Trotsenko. Bearable Heaviness of Significance
DESCRIPTION:What is significant? Who is significant? Is it an object, a person, an event? Recent, old, in the past – future? A significant one or insignificant? Who decides and who cares? After all, do we need to feel heaviness, even more, to bear it?\nThis exhibition deploys several attempts to escalate significance. One endeavor demonstrates that even events from the distant past are worth being retold through artistic interpretations. Connecting the past with the present allows us to see the future, which is more predictable than ever. By bearing the heaviness of injustices in the past, we foresee what awaits us. Or is it a chance to change it?\nSome events that were supposed to happen never happened. Despite disappearing into the abyss, these unrealized concepts become the ever-lingering question: what if…, which constantly weaves its way through time. What if is also a feeling, one that probably belongs to the family of nostalgia. It comes and goes, intensifying when life is accompanied by difficult, sometimes even tragic events. When what if takes physical form, the impossibility of changing something in the past becomes a possibility within the realities of the future.\nSimilarly with decay. Some things disappear quickly, others slowly, although do they ever disappear entirely? Bitterly and unsurprisingly, the heaviness of Earth’s soil cannot secure erasure, as man-made substances persist, abiding on the surface and beneath it, and into the future. Man also covers the same ones as himself with the weight of sand and dirt, but the souls ascend to the clouds — an alert zone.\nIn the end, the significance of a person, event, or place is a personal perception that questions the collective memory landscape. Something might be missing there, or not supposed to be visible and remembered. It goes by feeling and experience, which ignite the responsibility to give it attention. Because the future always brings back the past, and because we have to care about heavy encounters and be able to bear them.\nTwo Vienna-based artists, Ana de Almeida and Leo Trotsenko, met in 2023 when they were both selected as part of the QMA Artist Collective. Since then, they have pursued individual production of artworks while discussing their art and the narratives that bind them. Both artists delve into the past and present by mixing archival material with contemporary urban and landscape archaeology. Their work stretches through time and changes sociopolitical realities, anthropologically centering both human and non-human elements.\nCurated by Justina Špeirokaitė\nExhibition architecture by Bilal Alame\n
