SUMMARY:Laura Matukonytė & Emilija Višinskaitė. Takes Time
DESCRIPTION:The word užtrunka (“takes time”) refers to the sense of duration, the mediation between states, and the atmospherics of material experience. Laura Matukonytė and Emilija Višinskaitė’s duo exhibition is a continuous material dialogue, marking their second collaboration within a shared exhibition space. Here, materials themselves become the subjects of inquiry.\nIt takes time to see. The artists’ “thinking hands” create autonomous forms, guided by the inherent properties of the materials. Paper, foam, and textile reveal themselves through processes of opening and transformation. The structural and physical qualities of matter prompt questions about the tension between interior and exterior, vulnerability, and the notions of disguise and adaptation within today’s context.\nIt takes time for paper to transform. Laura Matukonytė’s objects invite an intimate gaze. By questioning and reconstructing the nature of paper, the artist allows the material itself to evolve into space and form connections with its surroundings. The fragility and aestheticism of paper help create delicate installations that evoke sensations of (non)being, desire, and a strange sensuality. Suspended between matter and emptiness, paper becomes a sign of both movement and stillness. Through her distinctive method of constructing form – based on the interplay between seam and void – Matukonytė creates translucent objects that balance between visible bodies and inner structures. Her works expose the fragility and transience of the material, shifting attention away from its initial aesthetic purity and untouchability towards the very depth of matter itself.\nIt takes time to attune. In Emilija Višinskaitė’s work, foam becomes a deceptively soft, inviting material. The leftovers of laser-cut templates – remnants of an industrial process – lose their former function and acquire a new one: they turn into speculative objects exploring the significance and lifespan of matter. Foam, wedged between walls and floor, reflects our relationship with comfort and consumerism. Both constrained and freely existing forms become markers of tension and absorbed experience. Their softness evokes a sense of comfort and artificiality. A material usually hidden within structures here opens itself to vulnerability, revealing nuances of elasticity, softness, change, and fragility. Observing the environment through a synthetic gaze, the artist questions the acceptability of industrial materials.\nIt takes time for layers of material to settle, touch, and speak. In the space, matter envelops the viewer through its weight, proportions, fragments, and softness. The works stretch, press, and lean into their surroundings, unfolding through one another. Accompanying the exhibition, Richard Hronský’s sound piece extends across the space, offering quiet cues to reflect on the ritual cycle of buying, using, discarding, and reusing.\nLaura Matukonytė (b. 1984) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores the potential of paper as a medium for sculptural form-making. Combining her background in print and fashion design with contemporary sculptural contexts, she develops a material dialogue in which paper – through its forms and interconnected particle systems – becomes a site for examining distortions in the development of identity within today’s abundance. Matukonytė holds an MA in Sculpture (Vilnius Academy of Arts, 2023–2025) and a BA in Fashion Design (Vilnius Academy of Arts, 2002–2006). She has been actively presenting her work in solo and group exhibitions since 2023.\nEmilija Višinskaitė (b. 1998) is a visual artist who graduated with a BA in Scenography from the Vilnius Academy of Arts and is currently pursuing an MA in Sculpture. Her artistic expression moves between object-making, installation, and scenography within diverse spatial contexts. Her practice engages with themes of environment, the impact of industrial materials on human states, and the aesthetics of synthetic presence. She often works with found materials, responding to their inherent meanings and physical qualities. Višinskaitė currently works across scenography and art education.\nCurator: Emilija Globytė\nTechnician: Kornelijus Pelkys\nSound artist: Richard Hronský\nExhibition dates: 14 November – 4 January\n
