R. Urbonas, a representative of informal underground in Lithuanian photography, chose position of a photographer – observer – at that time widely spread approach among artists stemming from the notion of “aesthetics of boredom“ originated in the 1980’s.
Having rejected the method of photojournalism, staged composition of a photograph, visual metaphor, the artist focused on a thing and landscape as an intrinsically valuable object of observation that is worth recording. The main motives of the photographs: fragments of hippie movement in Soviet Union, depersonalised Soviet-time every-day life, unarranged compositions of still-life objects, Lithuanian small towns, performances and rehearsals of “Gliukai” theatre, Eastern Prussia…
