On Friday, the 29th of September, 2017, at 6 pm, The Klaipėda Culture Communication Center invites everyone to the presentation of the artist’s Tadas Vinkaitis neo-fresco to the community of the city. The event will take place next to the building on Gulbių g. 2 in Klaipėda.
The street artist Tadas Vincaitis-Plūgas, while preparing for his first personal exhibition “From the Street to a Gallery”, which is currently open at the KCCC Exhibition Hall, has decided to go beyond the exposition inside the gallery and to depicture his piece of work on facades of one of the buildings for a keepsake of Klaipėda. Especially because, at the end of the exhibition, the author is going to destroy, i.e., to paint over the paintings created for the exhibition on the walls of the KCCC Exhibition Hall. According to the artist, this is consistent with the concept of the street art, as a temporary art.
While looking for a building for his work, T. Vincaitis considered nine-storey buildings too, but, once he saw a small house on Gulbių g. 2 at the turn of the street, he chose its facade to paint a social-themed neo-fresco on. The building is especially good for works of this genre, as well visible to those passing both Naujoji Uosto and J. Janonio streets. “This way, my wish to return a part of the exposition back to the street, where this genre, quite often manoeuvring around the “safe and comfortable” topic, is revealed at its best, will be reflected”, says the artist.
This project is being implemented in cooperation with theKlaipėdabuilding maintenance and administration service provider “Vitės valdos”, UAB.
“Inhabitants of the house have enthusiastically approved the artist’s project presented, so, the wall of this small apartment house, which is pending a refurbishment, will soon turn over to the 70 sq. m large street artwork. We are certain that this vivid masterwork will enrich not just the house, but also the adjoining, highly busyJ. Janonio street, which carries thousands of cars every day. This project is of high importance for us as a housing administrator, too, since we work every day to ensure that residents ofKlaipėdaare happy with their homes and surroundings”, says Director of “Vitės valdos”, UAB Vaidas Barakauskas.
The work of Tadas Vinkaitis, for the implementation of which all the required permits are at hand, is not the first one in our city. Residents of Klaipėda have come to love one of his works, neo-fresco “Sapnas” (“The Dream”), created together with the artist from Klaipėda, Edvardas Šeputis, on the wall of Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Faculty of Klaipėda on Daržų street. Works of the one of pioneers of graffiti art inLithuaniacan be found on building facades inVilnius,Kaunas, Šiauliai,Riga,Bethlehem, and other cities. When being asked if works of this format can be named street art, T. Vincaitis-Plūgas shared his thoughts, “Maybe, this is no longer street art, but rather a large-scale official facade decoration. After all, street art is instantaneous, anonymous, illicit, thus, making some sort of gap. However, in the absence of a more precise definition for this genre, it is notionally named the street art for a while.”
At the exposition of the exhibition of T. Vincaitis “From the Street to a Gallery”, which will run until the 15th of October, 2017 in the KCCC Exhibition Hall, several works in large format, created right on the walls of the Exhibition Hall, are illustrating the influence of the graffiti subculture on the creativity of the author as well as the evolution of the artist as a creative personality, and his relationship with the surroundings and himself. By virtue of his works, the author emphasises the fact that the new-generation art forms – graffiti, post-graffiti, or neo-fresco – can be the language of artistic expression, too, not just in the social context.
