The art project “Palemonas remix” analyses the present situation of Lithuanian Expressionist painting. The object of the project is the oeuvre of the middle-generation Expressionist painter Gintaras Palemonas Janonis and its transformations. The research uses this artist’s painting work as an example of the Lithuanian Neo-Expressionist stream, which emerged in the 1990s.
Works of the painter are analysed in the context of Expressionism by implementing the issue of significance of expressionist painting and modernity in practice. The project questions the present situation of Lithuanian painting and is based on close collaboration between the artist and curators. The curators remix Janonis’ works by analysing and distinguishing several motifs of his work and arranging new structures of meaning and impact.
Such a collaboration becomes an agreement in each concrete case, therefore the remix strategy should be associated to the case study method, as the collaboration is highly dependent on the nature of the works of the particular artist who is offered such a strategy, the author’s willingness to change his work, his personality and communication skills, as well as the personal relationship of the curator and the artist.
