Exhibition „Neringa” 14 08 2014-28 09 2014
Opening 5 p.m. 14th August
The exhibition, under the title „Neringa”, is inpired by story about Curonian Spit .
A long time ago, before the Curonian Spit existed, there was a chain of beautiful little sand islands in front of the Lithuanian coast. On of these islands, there lived a pretty girl with golden braids, her name was Neringa. Neringa happened to grow very very fast- finally, she became a giant. But a friendly one: she helped the fishermen- she was chasing fishes into their nets and saved their boats if necessary.
One day, the angry god Bangputys was blowing an incredible storm into the water. The fisherman came running to Neringa, asking for her help. Of course, Neringa was willing to do so and she started to collect sand in her apron.
She was working like mad – she brought sand and sand and sand. Finally, she managed to connect the various small islands, and she protected them by very high sand dunes, which stopped the angry sea. This way, a very quiet part of sea was made: the backwaters. Here the fishermen could successfully do their job in peace. They named the island after the friendly giant: Neringa.
