Creative frottage session “Stories of Surfaces”
On 11 April at 12.00, the creative frottage session “Stories of Surfaces” with the artist and designer Lidija Kuklienė will take place in the Education Zone of the Art and Culture Fair at the Exhibition Hall of the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre (KCCC), Didžioji Vandens g. 2.
We will create free abstract compositions using the frottage technique. We will look for as many interesting textures as possible in our surroundings and in household objects. We will arrange the patches of texture on the sheet according to the laws of composition. We will create a focal point and both harmony and contrast between different textures. We will assemble static and dynamic compositions. We will construct an imagined, fantastical scene out of unexpected areas of texture.
Frottage (Fr. frottage, “rubbing”) is a technique for obtaining an impression of the texture of various objects, characteristic of Surrealist art and based on the method of automatism.
Paper, and sometimes canvas, is placed on a textured surface (a coin, a medal, an unplaned board) and rubbed with a pencil, a crayon or a swab dipped in paint. Textures and patterns are obtained, and unexpected visual associations are created.
