Doll-making laboratory with Paulina Belik

On Wednesday 29 April at 17.30, the slow-making workshop “Doll Laboratory” by the KCCC resident Paulina Belik will take place at the Exhibition Hall of the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre (KCCC), Didžioji Vandens g. 2, during which participants will be invited to become acquainted with the artist’s practice and to try out processes of slow, material-based making themselves.

The interdisciplinary artist Paulina Belik (b. Narva, Estonia) combines traditional crafts and contemporary media in her work. Having completed animation studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts, she consistently develops in her practice a dialogue between the digital and physical worlds, combining computer graphics with earthy materials.

Textile occupies an important place in the artist’s work — as a medium that makes it possible to explore new forms, structures and dimensions. Flexible and versatile, textile in P. Belik’s works becomes not only a field for experiment but also a symbol of durability, longevity and slow making.

In recent years the artist has deliberately turned towards handwork, seeing it as a counterweight to the accelerating rhythm of contemporary life. In her practice, handcraft becomes a way of restoring a connection with oneself, with material and with one’s surroundings, and objects made by hand acquire a particular value in today’s context. During the workshop the artist will invite participants to make a doll out of wool.

“Art is an opportunity to break away from everyday life and to experience something truly alive,” says the artist.
