Joint Exhibition “Inventory”

In administrative practice, an inventory marks a pause: doors are locked, routine operations suspended, assets carefully counted. This exhibition moves in the opposite direction. It throws those doors wide open, opening up the Exhibition Halls of the Klaipėda Cultural Communication Centre (KCCC) to emerging artists and proposing to inventory not objects but the city’s human and creative resources. It is an attempt to take stock of those who are creating now, ensuring that their work does not go unnoticed but finds its place in a shared ‘inventory book’.

In the traditional art world, exhibitions function as filters, and the curator plays the role of a gatekeeper, empowered to sort art into appropriate or inappropriate, professional or amateur. This exhibition deliberately questions such positions of authority. It relinquishes the institutional privilege of deciding who deserves visibility and who does not. In doing so, it positions itself as a form of resistance to hegemonic structures.

Within the exhibition, boundaries between the ‘insider’ (the academically trained professional) and the ‘other’ (the self-taught outsider) are blurred. The curators avoid segregating artists into separate ghettos. Instead, they pursue a polyphony of voices and ideas, in which the meaning of an individual work is shaped not by the author’s status but by its placement among and alongside others. Diversity here is understood as an unavoidable condition of the contemporary.

The exhibition space is conceived not as a linear narrative but as a chain of free associations, or as constellations. Works are installed by locating a fitting – or sometimes accidental – position, at times stacking upon one another, forced into proximity. The structure of the exhibition mirrors the fragmentation and multiplicity of contemporary everyday life.

Visitors are invited to become wanderers – flâneurs – roaming through a ‘cosmos’ in which each artist appears as a separate galaxy. There is no single narrative in the exhibition; instead, it unfolds as a chaotic inventory list, revised by the viewer while moving through the space and generating meanings and values through personal experience.

Inventory captures the present moment. It is a field in which one may debate professionalism or conceptual rigour, yet cannot deny the force of creative impulse itself. Rather than passing judgement, the exhibition invites viewers to observe how different media and themes interact within a shared ecosystem, and to sense the potential of the city’s artists.
