The builders of medieval cities believed that the earthly city is a reflection of the heavenly one. After my brother’s death I found a paper brick in his wardrobe, on the shelf where the most important things and books were kept. The inscription read: “I have bought a brick for the construction of the St Francis Oncology Centre in Klaipėda”. A brick folded out of paper was a promise, a plan for a future building. Before long a real building rose on those paper foundations. The paper brick, printed 17 years ago, is older than the walls standing here. Fragments of cosmic bodies older than the Earth itself are also found in the ground. The cornerstone brick returns to the house of the future.

The collection of the Monastery of St Francis of Assisi includes the Stations of the Cross by Aleksandra Kašuba, created in 1960 for the Lithuanian Franciscan chapel in Brooklyn (New York, USA). Kašuba made not only mosaics but also three-dimensional reliefs out of the bricks used to build the building. Aleksandra Kašuba rediscovered the brick and created impressive scores for New York’s public spaces. During the tour we will read the patterns of bricks and build a paper city.
Laima Kreivytė
Laima Kreivytė – an independent curator, artist and writer. She teaches at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. She has curated more than 70 exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, among them the Baltic Pavilion at the third Prague Biennale and the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale. She takes part in exhibitions both solo and with the group Cooltūristės. She is one of the founders of National Emancipation Day and the author and a signatory of the Declaration of 17 February. She has published two books of poetry and compiled albums of the work of Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė, Kęstutis Zapkus, Jurga Barilaitė, Igoris Piekuras and Milda Drazdauskaitė. She hosts the LRT radio programme “From the Balcony”.
