They are trying to talk to one another, and we are simply listening.
The prototype sound transducers communicate with something that hovers above them, stops, moves downwards, into the river, into the void and back. Stuck. Having accumulated too much. Upwards, downwards, the river, to nowhere and back.
Presented in the turbine hall of “Klaipėdos energija”, the work illustrates electromagnetism by transforming electrical energy into working sonic material. The loudspeakers built by the artist are unprotected and unamplified; essentially they are bodies that are given the chance to communicate with their kindred turbogenerators or to reproduce a piece of music composed for this system of twenty oscillators. The installation can be experienced in the premises of the old Klaipėda thermal power plant, which will be opened to visitors specially for this occasion, to present the results of the artistic research.
Tata Frenkel
Tata Frenkel is an artist-researcher working in the fields of electroacoustics and education, and a theremin player. In her works Tata explores invisible arts, among them the electrical potential of the human being, the presentation of methods through educational activities, storytelling over the airwaves, speaking radio bodies, the performativity and physics of communication, and the continuous prototyping of electroacoustic systems grounded in collaboration with electrical technology.
