The series of works “Retort” is a comment on urban space, a remark inserted into an environment already overcrowded with advertisements, messages and texts. A “free city”, as Klaipėda often presents itself, could be free of a great many other things as well – including sculptures of often dubious artistic (and any other) value that sprout in every still-vacant plot, frequently as some business company’s “gift to the city” or simply as an “urban accent”. This work invites a critical look at the tendency of cities to stick hyperrealistic kitsch objects everywhere, and calls on us to see the beauty of the city simply in its architectural forms, in the structure of its streets and the spaces they form, in its pockets of urban nature and so on.
Viktorija Juzefa Venckutė
Viktorija Juzefa Venckutė completed a bachelor’s degree in scenography at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and is currently studying for a master’s degree in applied art. In her work she often uses texts and narratives as a point of departure. Just as a play is interpreted when staging a performance, so in the city she interprets the rumours people carry, media articles, legends and other urban texts.
